Day 11âAt Sea
THERE WAS NO way Brooks would renege on his promise to Sid. He wanted no involvement in the Barton case, but the rest of the Cranford group did not share his resolve. He received numerous calls from various members who wanted to know what was being done to investigate Aliceâs death. Before leaving the ship, Troy spoke to several of his travel mates and apparently shared his opinion that Alice was killed intentionally.
Brooks sensed that as much as anything, they were seeking reassurance that they were not in danger. At only 9:00 am he was already wrapping up a discussion with one of them. After hanging up the phone, he turned to Sid with a worried expression.
âYou know, I keep saying this has nothing to do with them, and they should stop worrying, but how do I know if thatâs true? There was no apparent reason for Alice to be targeted, and the fact is the group is the only link between Alice and what happened.â
âBrooks, thereâs nothing you can do. Weâve been over this too many times. If thereâs a threat to any of those other people, what can you do about it? Madeira may be annoying, but you donât think heâs incompetent, do you?â
He stared at her then grimaced. âI wish I could say I donât, but if it wasnât for Darcy, weâd still be completely in the dark about the questionable circumstances at the spa. I donât think heâs trying very hard.â
There was a knock on the door, and Brooks pulled it open to find Captain Swenson standing there with a cup of coffee in hand. âHello, Captain. Please come in.â
Sid greeted him and gestured toward the couch. âDo you want to sit down?â
âActually, I will only be here a minute. I have to get back to the bridge for a meeting. I told you I would get back to you about Chief Madeiraâs concerns.â He smiled obviously trying to inject some friendliness. âI trust you enjoyed your tour to the reef?â
Brooks stepped closer to Sid. âYes, thanks for asking. It was a wonderful experience.â
âYes, Iâve done it myself. It is quite extraordinary⦠Well, Iâll just get to the point. I personally do not think you impersonated a waiter or tried to hurt Mrs. Barton. Nonetheless, my security chief does believe this. He makes a somewhat convincing case given the total absence of any other explanation. Of course, all decisions on matters like this are mine in the end, but Iâm not ready to contradict him at this point.â
While the captain spoke, Brooks moved even closer to Sid and put his arm around her. He could feel her trembling and knew she sensed as he did that something negative was coming. There was nothing he could say, so he nodded for the captain to finish whatever he intended to tell them.
âYes, well, for the next few days at least, I would appreciate if you would continue to stay primarily in the stateroom. And please do not have any contact with the other members of your tour group.
